A doula is trained and experienced in many details of birth that partners generally are not. A doula provides support to the labouring woman’s partner, adding to the shared experience of birth and relieving some of the pressure the partner may feel. A doula is the only person committed to being with you through birth continuously without interruption, while your other caregivers will come and go.

Research has shown that women who have the kind of continuous support during birth that a doula provides experience the following:

  1. Less need for medical interventions such as epidurals, analgesia, vacuum or forceps extraction and cesarean section.

  2. More positive birth memories.

  3. Enhanced breastfeeding.

  4. Less postpartum depression and anxiety.

The acceptance of doulas in maternity care is growing rapidly with the recognition of their important contribution to the improved physical outcomes and emotional well being of mother

and infants.

Testimonials

We are two doulas who work together to provide Vancouver area women with labour care and support.

We are both members of the Doula Services Association and DONA.

We share the following beliefs:

  1. Birth is a normal and healthy event in a woman’s life.

  2. Birth should be celebrated, not feared.

  3. Birth is challenging and demands support.

  4. With the proper support, birth can be an empowering process for women and their partners.

  5. A woman’s confidence and ability to give birth can be enhanced or diminished by those who surround her.

  6. Women have the right to choose where thy give birth and the type of care they receive.

  7. Our role is to nurture and protect your memory of your birth.

  8. If you don’t know your choices, you don’t have any.
