A doula is trained and experienced in many details of birth that partners generally are not. A doula provides support to the labouring woman’s partner, adding to the shared experience of birth and relieving some of the pressure the partner may feel. A doula is the only person committed to being with you through birth continuously without interruption, while your other caregivers will come and go.
Research has shown that women who have the kind of continuous support during birth that a doula provides experience the following:
-
•Less need for medical interventions such as epidurals, analgesia, vacuum or forceps extraction and cesarean section.
-
•More positive birth memories.
-
•Enhanced breastfeeding.
-
•Less postpartum depression and anxiety.
The acceptance of doulas in maternity care is growing rapidly with the recognition of their important contribution to the improved physical outcomes and emotional well being of mother
and infants.
